YOGA TAUGHT THE TRADITIONAL WAYAt The Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation in Chennai India students like myself are taught to teach Yoga and offer therapeutic yoga to the public as an alternative healing methodology. It is with great pride that I have been taught in this way because the KHYF is committed to excellence in yoga education and all the teachers at the Mandarim are extremely well trained and knowledgeable and follow the teachings handed down to them by T. Krishnamacharya. Krishnamacharya studied hard and practiced Yoga for many years with teachers and for the rest of his life shared his knowledge of Yoga as a holistic healing discipline with thousands in his own country and with many others who came to study with him from Europe and America. He started a quiet revolution that revitalised Yoga for the modern age and produced some of the most influential Yoga masters of our time, all of whom were his students: TKV Desikachar, Indra Devi, BKS Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois.Krishnamacharya's son TKV Desikachar the youngest of Krishnamacharya's four children began to study yoga with his Father in the 1960's and continued learning with his teacher until 1989 the year Krishnamacharya died. Like is Father, TKV Desikachar has carried on the work of Yoga primarily in India yet travelling all around the world to share the teachings of Yoga with others, but his first commitment is to the healing work of Yoga, to his Father's work. Desikachar is the respected and creative steward of the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandarim. His son and student Kausthub has committed himself to becoming a full time student and teacher of Yoga as well as being an excellent therapist. He also travels the world sharing the teachings of yoga as well as building and helping the KHYF Teachers and Therapist to take yoga into the next generation. Traditionally Yoga was taught to students on a one to one basis, the teacher would only pass on the knowledge and practice when the student was felt to be ready. As a Qualified KHYF Teacher my aim is to teach and continue studying in this tradition guiding and encouraging students who wish to deepen their practice, supporting and helping those who have physical disabilities giving practices which will encourage the healing process and welcoming anyone who has never practiced yoga before. Each student will have the benefit of personal tuition and have a personal practice to do daily. This approach empowers the individual to take full responsibility for their health and well being. There are many tools that can be applied to help the individual develop in their own time with patience and persistence great changes can be made. ![]() 121 YOGA IN HEATHFIELD WITH PENELOPE COOMBER KHYF TEACHER and BWY Dip.Penelope has been a Qualified Teacher with The Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation (KHYF) since 2008 and The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) since 2002 and has practiced yoga for many years prior to this.
